Morioka, the capital of Iwate Prefecture, punches well above its weight when it comes to food. Home to not one but three famous noodle dishes — wanko soba, jajamen, and Morioka reimen — and the beloved Fukuda Pan with its legendary kompe bread, Morioka is a must-visit destination for food lovers exploring Tohoku.
The Three Great Noodles of Morioka
1. Wanko Soba — The Noodle Eating Challenge
Perhaps the most famous dish associated with Morioka, wanko soba is not just a meal — it’s an experience. Small, one-bite portions of buckwheat noodles are served in tiny lacquer bowls, and the moment you finish one, a kimono-clad server drops another into your bowl. The goal: eat as many as you can. The Iwate average is around 50 bowls; seasoned competitors clear 100+. Budget around ¥3,000–4,000 per person.

2. Jajamen — Morioka’s Hidden Gem
Less well-known internationally but arguably more addictive, jajamen consists of thick flat noodles topped with a rich miso paste mixed with ginger, garlic, and scallions. When you’re nearly finished, ask for “chitan-tan” — the chef adds a raw egg and hot soup to your remaining miso paste to create a warming egg-drop soup. The most famous spot is Pairon (白龍), open since 1953.

3. Morioka Reimen — Korean-Inspired Cold Noodles
Introduced to Morioka by Korean immigrants in the 1950s, Morioka reimen features chewy, translucent noodles in a clear beef and chicken broth served cold. Toppings include kimchi, watermelon or pear slices, a boiled egg, and cucumber. Pyonpyon-sha (ぴょんぴょん舎) is the benchmark restaurant.

Fukuda Pan — Morioka’s Legendary Sandwich Shop
Since 1948, Fukuda Pan has been feeding Morioka with its enormous, pillowy kompe bread sandwiches. Choose from dozens of fillings: red bean paste, butter, chocolate spread, potato salad, kinako, and seasonal specials. A sandwich costs around ¥150–300 — one of the best-value snacks in all of Japan.

Getting to Morioka
