Hidden in the coastal city of Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, the Kamo Aquarium (加茂水族館) holds a remarkable world record: it displays more species of jellyfish than any other aquarium on the planet. Once on the brink of closure, this beloved institution reinvented itself and became one of Tohoku’s most magical and unexpected travel destinations.
Why Kamo Aquarium Is Worth the Trip
Most visitors come expecting a standard aquarium and leave completely mesmerized. The jellyfish hall — home to over 50 species displayed in glowing tanks — creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The centerpiece is a massive 5-meter circular tank where hundreds of moon jellyfish drift in hypnotic spirals, lit by soft blue light. It’s one of the most photographed scenes in all of Tohoku.

The Remarkable Comeback Story
In the early 2000s, Kamo Aquarium was struggling financially with visitor numbers plummeting. Rather than close, the team made a bold decision: go all-in on jellyfish. They began breeding species that had never been kept in captivity before, developing techniques now used by aquariums worldwide. By 2012, they had broken the Guinness World Record for the most jellyfish species on display.
